Race
Ted talk video “Witness Unconscious Bias”
I know that this is my White Fragility and a bit of ignorance talking but I was really saddened by the notion that Josephine Kwhali knew what racism was at the age of 4. How racism permeates through the different stages of life in subtle and not so subtle ways which means that a little girl understands that she is being treated differently from her peers because of the colour of her skin.
The only racism I had to think about growing up in Germany was the Nazi racism we were taught about at school spanning several years, illuminating history from many different angles and even speaking to concentration camp survivors.
Essay proposal – Diversifying design references and inspiration for students
Within my teaching practice I often share relevant references, designers, artists and websites with my students. This is either as a planned part of a session, in which a list of references is explored by the students to foster discussions or give them context for their task at hand, or spontaneously during tutorials and seminars while discussing their design work.
Faith
All of the resources paint a beautifully fluid picture of faith and religion.
I loved how Saffron Mustafa chooses how to express her faith and how she keeps re-interrogating and re-inventing how she sees herself within it. Not being religious myself I find it fascinating that someone would choose a specific religion or convert to a faith. So it’s not always about learned customs that are passed down but a choice and a belief in values.
Disability
This was a rich list of eye-opening resources and since it was mentioned in more than one of the resources I looked more into the social vs. medical model of disability which I had not heard as a concept before.
Putting responsibility solely on the disabled person feeds into the same debate of blaming a woman for being raped because she wore certain types of clothes / was drunk / etc rather than looking at how society is structured to enable rape and exclusion. There is so much more work to be done and I hope that the medical model will loose traction.
I love the podcast “the Guilty Feminist” (https://guiltyfeminist.com) which provides a platform for a wide range of disabled people and other marginalised groups. It has made me very aware of subtleties of disabilities and helped me recognise my many privileges.
